Houston Texans February Scouting Report
David Trojanowsky
2/25/2017

For the second year in a row the Houston fans expect the team to draft a QB with their top pick. QB Brock Osweiler has not endeared himself to the team and the fans. It was obvious last year that he didn’t have a grasp of this difficult O. Third year pro QB Tom Savage did but wasn’t able to sell himself due to a concussion that effectively ended his season when it mattered the most. Will they gamble on a FA? Probably not because they only have 20 million plus change of salary cap and are heavily weighted down with Brock’s 37 million plus or minus cap hit. Expect a QB to be drafted somewhere because there is definitely a need of fresh talent in the QB room. Is QB Tony Romo a possibility? I doubt it, by the time he learned the O he’d be retired. Stranger things have happened.

The current best OL prospects include LT Duane Brown, LG Xavier Su’a-Filo, C Nick Martin, C Greg Mancz and RG Jeff Allen. RT Derek Newton may not be back this year as he rehabs two torn patella tendons. Ouch! Word from Duane that Newton’s rehab is going well but… Last year Mancz started every game out of necessity. Martin is back from an ankle injury and has a chance to be a special player. Mancz may not be big enough to play guard. We’ll see. The OL really struggled last year. An infusion of talent is desperately needed. Especially at RT.

RB Lamar Miller is the alpha back here. The Texans will be looking at RB for a value late round pick in the draft to replace one of the back-ups.

The Texans would like another playmaker in their WR corps. Clearly WR DeAndre Hopkins is their one but who will emerge as the two? Last year’s first pick WR Will Fuller started off hot but then nagging injuries and ‘the drops’ set in. The coaches hope either third year vet WR Jaelen Strong or sophomore WR Braxton Miller will emerge at the slot. Somehow TE C.J. Fiedorowicz emerged from being a bust to a must play last year. With opposing Ds taking away the long ball he was open to do damage underneath. The team could use a hot TE but their needs at other positions clearly outweigh justifying drafting one in the early rounds.

The D played well last year. DE Jadeveon Clowney emerged; if he and DE J.J. Watt could stay healthy and play together it would be fun to go to the games. Young unrestricted FA CB A. J. Bouye played so well last year that the team probably won’t be able to resign him this year. I can’t see past what I just described.

Next month free agency then in April the Draft; this is the most exciting time of the season for people like us. Who will be here this year should become clearer soon.

End.
